Mounted Posse

Mission

To encourage experienced horsemen to volunteer and to take an active part in the Mounted Unit in the following ways:

  • Assisting Rangers in park patrols
  • Assisting with traffic control at park-sponsored special events and festivals
  • Presenting a variety of educational programs to the public
  • Representing the Lake Metroparks at community parades
  • Acting as goodwill ambassadors for the Lake Metroparks in general

 

Lake Metroparks Mounted Posse Volunteers have been working with the Park Rangers since 1989.


Join the Posse

The Lake Metroparks Volunteer Mounted Posse encourages experienced horsemen to assist the Ranger Department. Potential Posse members are required to tryout for this program to ensure the riders’ ability and the horses’ suitability for the program. Tryouts are usually held annually in the fall and training is held throughout the winter months (generally on Sunday evenings, twice a month for six months).

Interested individuals need to have the following qualifications:

  • Lake Metroparks Volunteer Mounted PosseBasic horsemanship knowledge
  • Availability to volunteer a minimum of 80 hours per year
  • Good communication skills
  • Must be available for six-month training class (classes are held twice a month on Sunday evenings)
  • Horse and rider must pass test to tryout for the unit which includes:
    • Interview
    • Basic Equitation
    • Obstacle Course
    • Trail ride
  • Must own or have access to a horse which will be suitable for the program
  • Minimum age for members is 21 years

Honor Guard

The Mounted Unit (Mounted Rangers and Volunteer Posse) has a Mounted Honor Guard that is available to be present at events such as: military funerals and opening ceremonies at events.

Education Programs

Programs are offered to educate public and private groups about the responsibilities of the Volunteer Posse, and to explain how they benefit the public by making the parks safer and more enjoyable.

Programs include:

  • Meet the Mounted Posse
    Lake Metroparks Volunteer Mounted PossePrograms are offered to educate public and private groups about the responsibilities of the Volunteer Posse, and to explain how they benefit the public by making the parks safer and more enjoyable.
  • Training the Ranger Horse and Posse Horse
  • Self-defense for trail riders
    Learn personal safety for trail riders, who often find themselves in remote areas. Learn to recognize suspicious behavior, potential threats and self defense techniques and responses from horseback.

Programs are scheduled at a minimum of two months in advance.
