Applications for summer 2012 seasonal positions are now being accepted.

Who May Apply

Lake Metroparks is accepting applications for seasonal employment. Seasonal employees are generally hired for a three-month period. Employment generally starts in April/May/ June and ends in July/August/September. Some positions require weekend, evening, and holiday work.

Where positions require driving, applicant must have valid Ohio Drivers’ License with good record and be insurable by Lake Metroparks insurance.

Applicants for employment in certain positions will be fingerprinted and subject to background check as a pre-condition to employment.

Wages

Seasonal wages vary depending on position and/or experience. Benefits include personal time and holiday pay and discounts on Lake Metroparks programs, retail items, and concessions

GATE KEEPER

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor

Brief Description: Monitors access to parking lot at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park. Assists with opening and closing. Collects parking fees, and assists patrons with directions and information. Represents Lake Metroparks in a positive manner. Assists with keeping beach area and control station clean and well maintained.

Requirements: First Aid recommended (will train). Knowledge of Lake County, strong public relations, basic math skills, dependable, and able to handle money appropriately. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

HEAD LIFEGUARD

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.-10.00/hr. (Depending on experience)

Location: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor

Brief Description:Supervise lifeguards and beach area at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park.  Assist with lifeguard scheduling and in-service training.  Assist public, and administer appropriate lifeguarding techniques and first aid when necessary.  Assist with keeping beach area, buildings, and rescue equipment clean and well maintained.  Assist with special events and/or programs when required.  Promote Lake Metroparks in a positive manner.  

Requirements:  Must have current certification in lifeguarding, C.P.R. for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid.  Knowledge of Lake County preferred. Boating experience preferred. Strong public relations skills required.  Must be able to work weekends and holidays.  Hiring dependent upon passing lifeguarding skills test.

LIFEGUARD

Rate: $7.70 - 8.50/hr. (Depending on experience)

Location: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor

CONCESSIONAIRE

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Locations: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor and Painesville Township Park in Painesville Township

Brief Description: Assist public at concession areas. Prepare, serve and sell food service items to the public. Keep concession areas clean and well maintained. Represent Lake Metroparks in a positive manner. Assist with inventory, special events and programs when required.

Requirements: First aid recommended (will train). Knowledge of Lake County, strong public relations, and basic math skills, dependable, and able to handle money appropriately. Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

WILDLIFE CARE SPECIALIST

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center in Kirtland, Ohio

Brief Description: Responsibilities include but not limited to offering educational and interpretive programs relating to wildlife and wildlife conservation issues, develop curriculum, and provide other visitor services. Responsible for training, cleaning, feeding, and providing daily enrichment for permanent animal ambassadors.

Requirements: Must have a background in zoology, wildlife management, animal care or related field. Must have strong customer service skills and be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

NATURALIST

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Penitentiary Glen Nature Center in Kirtland

Brief Description: Provides visitor contact and information in the Nature Center at Penitentiary Glen Reservation. Presentation of interpretive public programs on a variety of nature subjects to participants of all ages. Will train on delivery style and background information. Responsible for assigned projects in natural and cultural history.

Requirements: Must be outgoing and service oriented. Must like talking with people of all ages. Prefer individual with background in the sciences, natural history, botany or childhood education classes. Gift Shop and/or Cashier experience desired. Past experience in parks (paid or volunteer) a plus.

CAMP COUNSELOR

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Different Sites within Lake Metroparks

Brief Description: Provide leadership, supervision and safety for small groups (sized 8-30) while participating in outdoor nature-related, art or active skill oriented activities.

Duties will include some or most of the following: Assist in development and delivery of nature-related activities; assist in instruction of canoeing, fishing, kayaking, art, rock climbing; provide supervision for campers during camp and at lunchtime; maintain records, parent sign in and sign out forms and other assigned paperwork; and lead/supervise off-site field trips.

Provide supervision and activities for extended hours service before and after camp on rotating basis. Help provide supervision and training for Volunteer Counselor Aides.

Requirements: Must be able to deal effectively with children grades 1-8. Counselors must be outgoing and able to establish healthy rapport with children; imaginative; creative and exhibit excellent communication skills for campers and parents. Counselors must demonstrate background in working with children and have at least one year of college. Valid Ohio driver’s license. Must be insurable under Lake Metroparks auto insurance.

CAMP COUNSELOR/INTERPRETER

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Farmpark in Kirtland

Brief Description: Assist in the development and daily operation of the Farmcamp program at Lake Metroparks Farmpark. Provide leadership, supervision and safety for groups (sized 10-40 of children age 4-12) while participating in indoor and outdoor farm-related activities. Duties include: Assisting in the development of farm related activities; conducting camp type games; providing supervision at campers lunch time; presenting farm related camp activities; maintaining attendance records for campers and leading off-site field trips.

Requirements: Must be able to deal effectively with children between the ages of 4-12. Counselors must be outgoing, able to establish rapport with children, imaginative, creative and exhibit excellent communication skills. Counselors must demonstrate background in working with children in outdoor recreation. Farm, animal care or gardening experience and interest desirable. High school diploma.

RECREATION TECHNICIAN

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor

Brief Description:Responsible for conceptualizing, planning, coordinating and implementing a summer play program at a variety of Lake Metroparks’ facilities including Beach Camp at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park.

Requirements: First Aid recommended (will train). Must be able to work weekdays in June through August, and able to work weekends and holidays when required. Previous experience with recreational programming for elementary-aged children preferred. Must provide own transportation to parks and throughout Lake County. Must be available for training/preparation work in May. Good customer service skills. Must have reliable transportation and current Ohio drivers’ license.

RECREATION TECHNICIAN (CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMER/BIRTHDAY HOST)

Brief Description: Prepares and presents a variety of children’s recreational programs with emphasis on children 3-12 years of age. Responsible for themed birthday parties at various parks.

Requirements: First Aid recommended (will train). Past experience working with children essential. Must have a college education or equivalent experience working with children. Must have reliable transportation and current Ohio driver’s license, and willing to work weekends and holidays.

RECREATION TECHNICIAN (CHILDREN'S ADVENTURE PROGRAMMER)

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Varies within Park District

Brief Description: Prepares and presents a variety of children's adventure programs with emphasis on children 5-14 years of age. Responsible for wide variety of outdoor adventure programs such as hiking, rollerblading, volleyball and mock search and rescue.

Requirements: First Aid recommended (will train). Past experience working with children essential. Must have college education or equivalent experience working with children. Must have reliable transportation, current Ohio driver's license, and willing to work weekends and holidays.

FARPMARK INTERPRETER

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Farmpark in Kirtland

Brief Description: Provide information to Farmpark general visitors and groups, including scouts, tour groups, and students, via 20-minute presentations and personal interaction. Responsible for general care of animals and/or plants within the interpretive area, where applicable. Assist with the development of interpretive materials. Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe interpretive area.

Requirements: Must be able to enthusiastically present clear and concise information to individuals and groups (ranging in size from 5-100). Must be willing to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays. Good communication and customer service skills are required. Must be able to perform manual labor including but not limited to cleaning and lifting. Experience with livestock and/or plants helpful.

MAINTENANCE WORKERS

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Locations: Positions may be available at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor; Painesville Township Park in Painesville Township; Farmpark in Kirtland.

Brief Description: Some jobs include but are not limited to the following duties:

General: Building and/or grounds maintenance. Mowing park grounds, painting, picking up litter, landscaping, assisting in making minor repairs on buildings and/or machines and performing custodial tasks.

Ball Field: Mowing outfield, drag and line infields, layout ball diamonds, and irrigation work. Knowledge of softball/baseball rules preferred.

Requirements: Willing to work flexible hours, weekends, evenings and holidays. Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor.

SNACK SHOP CLERK

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Pine Ridge Country Club in Wickliffe

Brief Description: Prepare, serve and sell deli style sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks and beverages to golfers. Keep coolers stocked and all snack shop areas and equipment clean and well maintained.

Requirements: Strong people skills, friendly, dependable, some food service experience helpful, able to handle money accurately. Must be willing to work alternating weekends, evenings (Snack Shop hours 7 a.m.- 7 p.m.), holidays and special golf outings as assigned.

GOLF CLUBHOUSE CASHIER

Minimum Rate: $7.70/hr.

Location: Erie Shores Golf Course in Madison

Brief Description: Responsible for accurately selling green fees, rental of golf equipment and merchandise on cash register, and processing charge payment and discounts. Prepares report of revenue activity during shift, counts money and prepares deposit report. May open or close pro shop. Enforces all golf course etiquette rules and policies. Answers telephone and in person inquiries about golf course facilities, services and special events. Schedules tee reservations.

Requirements: Some golf knowledge is helpful. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays and varying work schedules as assigned.

BOATING INSTRUCTOR

Minimum Rate: $7.70 - 8.00/hr. (Depending upon experience)

Location: Various facilities in Lake Metroparks, Lake County, Ohio, including but not limited to Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor; Lakefront Lodge in Willowick; and on Lake Erie and the Grand River.

Brief Description: This dynamic individual will work with Lake Metroparks and its Recreation Department during the summer boat season; assist with program delivery and promotion of the Spirit of America Program and park-sponsored sail, motor, and human powered boat programs; assist with the up-keep and maintenance of all equipment maintaining a clean, safe and a fully operation environment. Individual will also assist with special events and/or programs when required, and promote Lake Metroparks in a positive manner.

Requirements: This individual must be at least 18 years of age and be comfortable in and around water in Lake Erie and the Grand River. Must possess a basic handling knowledge of canoes, kayaks, sailboats and powerboats. Knowledge in one or more areas of boating is a plus, but will train. This individual should possess a standard first aid and C.P.R. certificate, and be able to pass a basic level swimming test in Lake Erie. Individual must complete an Ohio Boaters Education Course by the start of the boating season. Strong public relations skills required, as this position deals directly with program participants. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Should have reliable transportation.
