Snapping Turtles

  • Posted June 07, 2018

By Andy Avram, Interpretive Manager

It's turtle nesting season and we are finding turtles on the trails and on the roads. Snapping turtles are the largest turtles in Ohio and can weigh more than 35 pounds! They are known for being bold and aggresive, so it is best to observe them from a distance. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you see a turtle while you are out and about:

  • It is generally best not to interfere with turtles. Even if they seem like they are in an unexpected place, it is usually best to leave them alone. Just like you, they have a home and will travel back to it. Only move a turtle if it is in grave danger (in the middle of the road, etc.).
  • Turtles move over land to look for places to lay their eggs. If they are crossing a road, put them on the side of the road they were originally headed. Do not try to find a nearby pond to put them in, even if they are heading into a cornfield. They need to find a place to lay eggs and will just go back where they were headed in the first place--back across the road.
  • Snapping turtles can be injured if they are picked up by the tail. It is best to grab them by the back of the shell (away from the head) or if all else fails, gently drag them off the road by the tail. But remember to move them to the side of the road they were originally headed.
