Many of you may have experienced the thrill of the trains that run through part of Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland. These miniature rides have brought much joy and laughter to thousands of people over the years. But how did it all begin?
For the past 50 years, the Lake Shore Live Steamers have thrived as a group of dedicated individuals. The club began with Clyde Bleil, a local florist with a love of trains. He built his own mini train track and visitors would come enjoy a ride around his shop. In 1969, Clyde and a group of train enthusiasts started a club now known as the Lake Shore Live Steamers.
In the early years, the mini steam engines did not have a home and traveled around Northeast Ohio sharing the joy of train rides at a variety of venues. However, in 1983, Lake Metroparks and the Lake Shore Live Steamers came together and created a new home for the trains. Since then, nearly three miles of track have been laid and more than 300,000 train rides have been enjoyed!
As time has passed, one thing has always remained the same for the Lake Shore Live Steamers—their passion and love for trains. As visitors exit the trains, club members love to hear the many positive comments that come following each train ride. “I remember coming up here with my grandpa when I was a kid and now I bring my own children” or “my granddaughter told me about the train in the woods after visiting Nature Play. We came back for a Halloween ride and the grand kids were just spellbound.” These comments illustrate just a few of the many great moments in the history of the club.
Train rides are offered at many events throughout the year including Magical Whooloween, Earth Day and Bug Day.
Thank you Lake Shore Live Steamers for all the laughter and joy you have brought to others! We wish you a happy 50th anniversary!
