When the North Meets the South

  • Posted May 09, 2019

By Andy Avram, Interpretive Manager

Even though last Sunday ended up being a beautiful sunny day, the morning was very cold and dreary. Despite the cold weather though, the birding was hot! The Sunday Morning Bird Walk crew saw 65 species with many new migrant birds returning from the tropics. A ruby-throated hummingbird buzzed us along the trail, blue-headed and warbling vireos put on nice shows for us, and wood thrushes serenaded us the entire time. We also saw orchard and Baltimore orioles, six warbler species including blue-winged warbler, and many rose-breasted grosbeaks. There were also some late-staying winter birds including two merlins and a red-breasted nuthatch. The star of the morning though was one of the long-staying common ravens that flew right over the picnic shelter while scolding us. Things are only going to get better in the coming weeks!
