Spring is for Steelhead, Stocking and Smallmouth

  • Posted April 17, 2019

So far, this spring has been full of the ups and downs of typical steelhead fishing. Steelhead fishing has been feast or famine. The Grand River offered up some perfect conditions for a few days recently and the bite was hot. Unfortunately, we got hit with a lot of rain and once again the river is high and muddy. Anglers are seeing plenty of steelhead when conditions are good and are also starting to see the spring run of smallmouth bass. Action will begin to taper off as we reach the end of the steelhead season.

Largemouth bass caught in pond at Girdled Road Reservation

Lake Metroparks recently completed the annual spring trout stocking at Indian Point Park. More than 800 lbs. of catchable size rainbow trout were stocked in Paine Creek to enhance fishing opportunities.

On 4/10/19, ODNR stocked more than 40,000 lake trout at Fairport Port Authority. All had a coded wire tag in their snout. This CWT is used to determine where and when the trout was stocked. For more information, click here.
