Event Information

A celebration of astronomical proportions where stargazers can explore the moon, planets, stars, and solar system. The event is designed for adults and children ages eight and older.

Come see a real piece of the moon! 
A lunar sample will be on display for viewing only.  Also, two meteorites will be available to view AND touch!  Both the lunar sample and meteorites are provided by of NASA. 

This year’s theme focuses on the object closest to the earth in our solar system…the moon! What does the full moon mean to you? Are you affected by the full moon? How has the full moon influenced humans for 1000s of years? Explore and understand our closest neighbor through many indoor and outdoor activities.

Activities

  • View the majestic display of the summer night sky above our park.
  • Enjoy a NASA presentation about the moon
  • Join the Amazing Star Race to seek out myths and legends of the moon.
  • Sit back and watch some great movies about the moon.
  • Step inside the STARLAB planetarium and explore backyard astronomy.
  • Have fun with glow-in-the-dark cornhole.
  • Take a naturalist-led night hike that will explore how humans have used the moon for 1000s of years.
  • Take a photo with the full moon
  • Watch the Perseid Meteor Shower
  • Participate in the Howl at the Moon contest for all ages.
  • The Wildlife Center yard will be open. There will also be a Wildlife Specialist available to introduce visitors to residents and answer questions.
  • View the moon, planets and other stellar objects with telescopes and expert guidance provided by the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society (CVAS) (weather permitting).
  • Members from CVAS will lead a discussion on the summer night sky.
  • The Lake Shore Live Steamers will be offering a “Red Light Express Train Ride” on miniature steam engines (weather permitting).
  • Discover “out-of-this-world” gifts at the Nature Store.
  • Refreshments will be available to purchase.

Registration

Large Telescopes at the Super Star PartyAdvanced-registration is requested to attend the Super Star Party, but all are welcome and can register at the door.

This program is designed for ages 8 and older

Registration fee is $4

All participants will receive a glow necklace.  Program runs rain or shine.

Directions:

Penitentiary Glen Reservation is located at 8668 Kirtland-Chardon Rd in Kirtland.

Take I-90 to Rt. 306 south for about one mile. Turn left onto Rt. 615. Turn right (east) onto Kirtland-Chardon Road and continue for two miles. Penitentiary Glen Reservation is located on the right (south) side of the road.
