28th Annual Amateur Photography Contest Show
Penitentiary Glen Reservation
June 14 through August 3, 2014 • FREE • 9 am to 5 pm daily

Lake Metroparks is pleased to announce the 28th year for this contest/show, which is designed to capture the beauty of nature in Lake County through the lenses of amateur photographers. Categories are: Lake Metroparks, Wildlife, Landscapes and Floral, Black & White, and Lake Erie. New category this year: Geology. A separate junior division will feature the work of photographers ages 14 and younger. ALL photos must be taken within Lake County.

Factory of Frozen Fun
Lake Metroparks Farmpark
Open Tuesday through Sunday through August 31
9 am to 5 pm

Kids will love the hands-on activities of The Factory of Frozen Fun. Interactive stations guide them through how ice cream comes from cow to cone.
Farmpark admission applies.

2014 Beach Schedule at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park
Open for the season through September 1 (Labor Day)
9:30 am to 8 pm (weather permitting)

Lifeguards on duty and the concession stand open from 9:30 am to 8 pm, depending on the weather. Sit-a-top ocean kayaks and stand up paddleboards available for rental by the hour at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, weather permitting. Weekend rentals begin at 8 am.

More than 20 wineries offer samples at this festival of wine. Event also features arts and crafts, demonstrations, music, food, children’s entertainment/play area and a carryout store. Special admission fee applies; tickets may be purchased in advance. Call 1-800-227-6972 for ticket information.

Enjoy a summer evening surrounded by nature at Penitentiary Glen Reservation’s outdoor amphitheater. Bring a lawn chair. Snacks and beverages are available for purchase. Indoor facilities are available in case of inclement weather. Alcoholic beverages permitted on site for the concerts only.
Free admission. No registration necessary.

Hummingbird Open House
Penitentiary Glen Reservation
August 3, 2014 • FREE • Noon to 4 pm

Come learn about the amazing ruby-throated hummingbirds at the annual Hummingbird Open House. Watch and marvel at the hummingbirds as they appear suspended in mid-air as they dart around the feeders located just outside the Window on Wildlife. We’ll provide tips and fun facts about hummingbird feeders and nectar, flowers that attract hummingbirds and where they will go for the winter. Enjoy an afternoon of free, fun activities for the whole family. No registration necessary.


Super Star Party

Penitentiary Glen Reservation
August 9, 2014 • 8 pm to midnight

Have fun with astronomy while looking up into the sky at the annual Super Star Party. It’s a celebration of astronomical proportions! Stargazers of all ages can catch a good view of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Also, see the moon, planets, stars, and solar system with telescopes and expert guidance provided by the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society (weather permitting).

All aboard for a ride on a miniature steam engine as you take the “Red Light Express Train Ride.” Trains are provided by the Lake Shore Live Steamers. Ride times must be selected at registration. Train rides are weather permitting. Stop by The Nature Store for “out of this world” gifts.

Fall Art Show

Discover nature from a feminine perspective through the media of watercolor and mosaic in this three-woman show. Meet the artists at the free opening reception on Saturday, August 23 from noon to 4 pm. Enjoy demonstrations by the artists and light refreshments. Art is available for purchase.

Bring the whole swarm out for a fun afternoon of live bugs, buggy games, activities and adventure. Ride on miniature trains provided by the Lake Shore Live Steamers 1 to 3 pm, weather permitting. Check out The Nature Store for “buggy gifts.”

September 10, 2014 • FREE Day for EVERYONE ages 55+ • 9 am to 1 pm

Lake Health will offer free health screening from 9 am to 1 pm. Screenings include blood pressure, body mass index, osteoporosis and cholesterol testing. Screenings available by registration only. Event also features Lake County Probate Court presentations and a vendor showcase featuring products and services important to today’s seniors.

Enjoy the sights, smells and tastes of autumn in Northeast Ohio. Journey through fall colors on miniature steam trains, 1 to 3 pm weather permitting, get creative with a craft, learn how wildlife prepares for the coming season and hike one of the many park trails. The Nature Store will be open.


Halloween Hayrides
Lake Metroparks Farmpark
October 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 & 25, 2014
Ride times: 6:30, 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30 pm

Family-oriented fun. Rated PG-5 on the “scare meter.”
Halloween Hayrides feature a narrated hayride along a trail filled with family-oriented thrills, chills, and adventures. Encounter upside down skeletons, falling spiders, and a lagoon with a mysterious creature! Many “fright” sites will leave you with goose bumps or giggles!

After riding on the wagon, visitors continue their journey with a walk along a haunted trail through Festival Field. The ‘Evolution of Dance’ featuring the glowstick dancers is back again by popular demand! Dress for the weather -- rides go rain, snow or shine!
Tickets must be purchased in advance; tickets sales begin September 8 for Lake County residents and all Farmpark members. Out-of-county visitors may order beginning September 15.


Magical Whooloween

This is a non-scary Halloween alternative for families with children ages 2 to 11 years old, featuring storytelling, crafts, games, night hike, nature facts, snack, and miniature steam train ride. The Nature Store will be open with autumn accents. Pre-registration required; fee applies.

The Wild Days of Winter Game
Penitentiary Glen Reservation
November 22, 2014 through January 4, 2015 • FREE • Noon to 5 pm
Open Christmas Eve noon to 3 pm; closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day

Play along on the magical indoor winter wonderland at Penitentiary Glen Reservation. Get in the action of The Wild Days of Winter on a life-sized game board. Take a turn and move along from space to space, and discover through interactive play the many things that nature gives to us in winter. Activity pages, crafts, refreshments available. Snowshoe rentals weather permitting. Visit the Nature Store for all your holiday shopping needs.

Dryland Sled Dog Challenge

Lake Metroparks Farmpark

The Dryland Sled Dog Challenge features a sanctioned race with prizes awarded in each category. Join mushers and their teams from the United States and Canada as they compete for the best time over a two-mile course. Enjoy the excitement of dogs and humans working together. Take time to meet the dogs and handlers and discover this exhilarating sport open to all breeds of dogs. Regular Farmpark admission applies.

Farmpark Toy Workshop
November 28 through 30 • 11 am to 3 pm

Children (ages 2 through 11) select from a wall full of wooden toys the one they want to build and sit down with one of Santa’s elves to put the toy together, complete with drills, power screwdrivers, and of course hammer and nails. The children then paint and glitter their new toy. Regular Farmpark admission applies.

Country Lights
Lake Metroparks Farmpark
November 28, 29, 30 and December 3 through 23, 2014 • 5 to 9 pm

Build a wooden toy in Santa’s Workshop, enjoy a wagon ride through thousands of lights; visit Santa in his sleigh, wander through model train and old fashioned toy displays; visit with Farmpark animals, and enjoy special presentations. Dinner and snacks available in the Café; no reservations required.
Tickets must be purchased in advance; tickets sales begin November 7 for Lake County residents and all Farmpark members. Out-of-county visitors may order beginning November 12.
