Festival Information

Join Lake Metroparks in partnership with Geauga County Soil and Water Conservation District in a celebration of the life, work and teachings of Aldo Leopold. An ecologist, a forester, a land conservationist, and an environmentalist, Aldo Leopold was influential in the development of modern environmental ethics and in the movement for wilderness preservation.

Considered one of the forefathers of the modern environmental movement, Leopold taught how and why to preserve our natural areas.  He taught that to develop an understanding of and appreciation for the natural world we must not simply legislate and control the citizenry. The only durable way of moving people to treat the land responsibly, is by appealing not to fear, greed, or duty, but to intellect, imagination, and love.

View exhibits, watch demonstrations, and participate in hands-on activities that exemplify the work of Leopold.  Activities include:

  • Dutch oven cooking workshops
  • Fly tying and fly fishing demonstrations
  • Community clean-up along Jordan Creek (Free program - waiting list)
  • Two man cross-cut saw demonstration
  • Displays from partner organizations
  • Learn About Birding (A favorite Leopold pastime.)
  • Community readings from A Sand County Almanac
  • Screenings of the video, A Prophet for All Seasons
  • Building the Leopold bench – make 2 take 1 and leave a legacy with the second. (Free program - waiting list)

The Aldo Leopold Celebration also consists of educational programs, workshops and an Eco-Cafe tied together by the “land ethics” that ran through Leopold’s work and writings.
