Hariett Hargrave
Harriet comes from a family of quilters. She mastered machine embroidery in the mid-1970s, and adapted machine quilting from there at a time when the local quilt guilds thought machine piecing was not kosher—let alone machine quilting! She was teaching machine piecing, appliqué and quilting through the adult education system by 1978 and opened her store, Harriet’s Treadle Arts, along with her mother in April of 1981.
Harriet has authored and co-authored a number of books, the latest with her daughter Carrie. They are currently working on a series of books for beginning quilters. The first in the series of six books debuted in September 2009 and includes her new workshop “Town Square.”
Harriet has also worked to develop an exceptional lines of natural fiber battings to meet quilters’ needs and has printed four very successful line of reproduction fabrics.
Harriet has traveled extensively worldwide spreading the word that machine quilting is okay and that quilts are not machine quilted, but “hand quilted with an electric needle.”
It is no wonder that Marti Michell, the 2004 Silver Star Honoree at the Houston International Quilt Festival, is often introduced as a pioneer in the current quilt revival. In fact, in 1972 when Marti and her husband Richard started Yours Truly, Inc., a patchwork kit company, there was no quilt industry. Whether she is participating as a teacher, quilter, author, publisher, manufacturer, designer, consultant, judge or quilt collector, her enthusiasm for and love of quilting is always evident.
Since 1995, the Michells have manufactured the From Marti Michell line of acrylic templates and specialty rulers for rotary cutting. In 1991, she also received the first Michael Kile award given for commitment to creativity and excellence in the quilting industry.
Her influence in the quilting industry is enormous. Marti lives in Atlanta, Georgia but was born and raised in Iowa. She received a B.S. in Textiles and Clothing and Home Ec Journalism from Iowa State University.
