The Children's Schoolhouse Nature Park is dedicated to teaching and sharing Lake County's natural heritage with children. All programs are developed with the 3 Rs of environmental education in mind: Respect for nature through learning; Reverence for all life and everyone's role in the natural world, and the Responsibility we all share to take care of the natural world for future generations. Now, children who visit the Schoolhouse will learn through their senses-they see, touch, smell, hear, taste, and remember.
Originally know as Riverside School #2 in the Kirtland Township School District, the schoolhouse opened its doors to students in 1894. Nearly a century later, in 1988, the Anthony S. Ocepek family donated the facility to Lake Metroparks.
