The Wildlife Center Yard at Penitentiary Glen Reservation is currently closed due to the spread of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as the bird flu, which has been found in wild free-ranging birds (mostly waterfowl) and backyard and commercial flocks (i.e. chickens, turkeys).
HPAI is rapidly spreading throughout Ohio and has been confirmed in neighboring counties. HPAI is highly contagious in birds and has a high mortality rate. Infected birds shed the virus through their feces and nasal discharge. The virus also has the potential to be spread to our permanent resident birds through contaminated clothing, boots and equipment. Lake Metroparks staff is taking precautions to protect our Animal Ambassadors by closing the wildlife yard during this outbreak of HPAI.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
