Livestock Specialist

Brief description/Requirements:

Livestock Specialist works under our Livestock Manager at our Farmpark in Kirtland, OH. Accountable for the care, management, and vetting of livestock, including but not limited to; cows, chickens, sheep, goats, pigs, and rabbits. Also responsible for record keeping, herd health, and breeding of various livestock. Perform/assist in demonstrations/programs on various farm practices/programs for visitors.

  • In-depth knowledge of agricultural management.
  • Ability to obtain and retain in-depth knowledge of herd management skills.

Forestry Specialist

Brief description/Requirements:

Under the supervision of the Forestry & Trails Superintendent, the Forestry Specialist performs tree removal functions, land management activities, tree care, tree planting and general vegetation management. Other duties but not limited to; landscaping, trail construction, trail maintenance, general construction/repairs, and assuring the public’s safety by maintaining the overall condition of the parks, grounds, and natural areas.

  • Ability to perform tree climbing using proper rigging, proper knots, felling and pruning operations with safety a priority for crews and visitors.
  • Proficient to operate types of forestry & land management equipment, including chainsaws, chippers, skid loaders, landscaping equipment and knowledge of applicable safety standards.
  • General knowledge of arboriculture, flora, fauna and basic horticulture, including proper pruning practices, typically acquired through ISA Arborist Certificate.
  • General knowledge of natural resources and wildlife, typically acquired through an Associate Degree in a related field.
  • CDL license preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months. Ability to acquire an herbicide applicators license.
  • Must have the ability to perform various types of manual labor and the ability to lift up to 75 lbs. in all types of weather conditions.
  • Interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively with other staff and communicate.
  • Knowledge of all related safety regulations and compliance in all on-going safety training requirements.

Wildlife Receptionist

Brief description/Requirements:

A part-time position in the Department of Interpretation at the Penitentiary Glen Wildlife Center. Under the direction of the Wildlife Care Manager, the Wildlife Receptionist provides assistance in visitor service, public information and other department projects. Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required. Will work 16-20 hours/week and up to 28 hours when needed.  

Provides information to park visitors, animal admittance and answers the Wildlife Hotline. Intake of program confirmations, deposits, inventory, reports, data entry. Prepares and/or compose correspondence/reports, mailings, department messages and will maintain appointment calendars. Will operate and maintain office equipment, collect & distribute mail and other projects as assigned to assist Manager and staff.

High school diploma with considerable secretarial or receptionist experience is required.  Post high school training and Associates Degree in related field is preferred. Must have good working knowledge of Microsoft word processing and Excel and ability to quickly learn computer systems/programs as required. Demonstrate the ability to write and speak in a clear and concise manner, and to work with people in a pleasant, enthusiastic manner. Must possess the ability to handle multiple tasks in a high paced environment, the ability to work quickly, efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions. Must be able to work with co-workers and the public, being creative, flexible, well organized and innovative. Wildlife Education Specialist - Penitentiary Glen Reservation

Brief description/Requirements:

Part-Time position working up to 28 hours per week, year-round at Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland. Under the supervision of our Wildlife Interpretive Manager, the Wildlife Education Specialist’s primary responsibilities include but are not limited to; offering educational and interpretive programs relating to wildlife and wildlife conservation issues, develop curriculum for wildlife programs for schools and public programming, develop interpretive tools such as brochures and signage, and provides other visitor services as required. Responsible for training, cleaning, feeding, and providing daily enrichment for permanent animal ambassadors. Secondary responsibilities include; providing follow through animal care and wildlife care operations that maximize efficiency and increase the quality of animal care.

Animal care - Provide daily care for permanent animal ambassadors.  Compliance with all state and federal regulations in housing and care, maintains accurate animal records and compiles statistics, attending conferences, meetings and workshops, and networking with the wildlife community, assists with public relations, media, and administrative duties, volunteer training and supervision for Center volunteers, assist with animal rehabilitation as needed.

Minimum of two years working with a variety of birds of prey, mammals, and reptiles.  Education experience required two-year degree in science, or equivalent knowledge and experience. Knowledge of operant conditioning is preferred. Experience with public speaking is a must. Must be familiar with computer systems.  Have the ability to write and speak in a clear, concise manner.  Ability to work with people in a pleasant, enthusiastic manner.  Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high paced environment.  Able to work quickly, efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions.  Must be able to work cooperatively with co-workers and the public. Part-time position at the Farmpark in Kirtland providing outstanding customer service to patrons visiting the facility.  Will be required to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, special events, and occasional evenings. Days of the week and hours will vary week-to-week up to 28 hours. Requires exceptional interpersonal skills, accurate and efficient handling of cash and cash register transactions and related paperwork, with ability to use computer and calculator. Outdoor Education Specialist - Environmental Learning Center

Brief description/Requirements: 

Two open positions; under the supervision of the Outdoor Education Manager, the Outdoor Education Specialist delivers boating and outdoor education programming for grades K-12 as well as adult programs; including but not limited to, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, camps and other boating related programs. Specialist with also assist in kayak rental operations at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, lead Outdoor Education programming, and assist with special events throughout the year. Programs are held at various park locations along the Lake Erie, Grand River and Chagrin River.

Second position; under the supervision of the Outdoor Education Manager, delivers education programming for grades K-12 dealing with nature as well as outdoor recreation programming for all ages. Assists with summer camps. Depending on background, programming topics will include, but not limited to, kayaking, fishing, archery, skiing, snowshoeing, team building activities or biology, chemistry and physics.  Other duties include working cooperatively on projects and special events throughout the year.

Hours: 24-28 per week; varies with Agency needs, more hours in the summer months

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred in parks and recreation management, environmental education, natural or physical science, education, or equivalent experience in a related field. Experience working with and/or teaching children is required. Must have valid driver’s license and be able to be insured under Lake Metroparks’ policy. Annually completes all necessary safety trainings required by Lake Metroparks. Background check is required. 

Desirable Traits:

Receptionist - Penitentiary Glen Nature Center

Brief description/Requirements: 

Under the supervision of the Interpretive Manager at Penitentiary Glen Nature Center, the Nature Center Receptionist will be responsible for answering telephone, taking messages, transferring calls and meeting and greeting the public.  This individual trains, coaches and schedules volunteers who assist with visitor services.  Will also assist with booking and facilitating rental clients, taking fees and writing receipts. Maintains a reservation book and online room availability, records statistics for Nature Center activities and updates procedures manual.  Duties also include but are not limited to, general office/clerical tasks, light housekeeping indoors and outdoors, ordering and maintains supplies, and assisting with special events as needed.

Preferred degree in Business, Marketing, Travel & Tourism, Parks & Recreation or equivalent experience.  Good interpersonal skills, courteous and articulate with high customer service/public relations standards. Possess a mature attitude; ability to exercise sound judgment, organized work habits.  Ability to use discretion when needed, write and speak in a clear and concise manner, multi-task, and grasp new assignments and projects successfully. Computer proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet.  Available to work most weekdays, and occasional weekends, holidays and evenings when needed.  Must be able coordinate and work with volunteers.  Ability to generate interest in the park to visitors and volunteers and possess a genuine interest in natural history.  Retail and/or cashier experience and prior experience with Point of Sales system is desired. This position may average 28 hours per week.

Interpretive Naturalist – Penitentiary Glen Nature Center

Rate: $9.75/hour - minimum starting rate

Brief description/Requirements: 

Under supervision of the Interpretive Manager, the Interpretive Naturalist plans, presents, and evaluates interpretive programs on natural and/or cultural history topics.  Other duties include but are not limited to, leading trail hikes varying in intensity, working cooperatively on projects/special events, addresses environmental issues and relates the above activities to the park districts role as land steward. Also assist with front desk duties and other naturalist duties.  Hours vary:  Approximately 28 hours per week.

Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, environmental education or related field, or equivalent experience.  Valid Ohio Driver’s license required and must be insurable by Lake Metroparks auto insurance. Annually completes all necessary safety and professional trainings as required by Lake Metroparks.

Paddle Sport Specialist

Assist with program delivery of kayak, canoe and standup paddleboard programs, paddle rental operation, special events, maintenance of all equipment and other Outdoor Education requested and scheduled programs and events as assigned.

Candidate must have exceptional customer service skills. Also, must be organized, have good communication skills, and a positive attitude. Assistant Concession Manager

Assist in managing the operations of the concession stand and gate. This includes supervising concession and gate staff on daily shifts, scheduling and training staff, and taking inventory. Responsibilities also include preparing, serving and selling food items to the public; keeping the concession area clean and well maintained, and must represent Lake Metroparks in a positive manner.

This position requires work on weekends, evenings, and holidays. This position also requires excellent customer service, organization, computer, and administrative skills. Head Lifeguard

Beach Patrol

Brief description/Requirements:

The Beach Patrol carries out the public safety and public service goals of the Outdoor Education Department and is responsible for monitoring the safety of the beach.

Relay violations of park rules to the beach manager; assist with parking; foot patrol of restricted areas; assist beach employees with money escorts; assist with injuries and emergencies; maintain records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, public officials, and the general public; perform vehicle lockouts; assist with lost persons; and handle lost and found property reports.

Unusual working condition:  Works variable hours, holidays and weekends; works outside and may be exposed to unpleasant weather conditions; varied hours up to 38 hours per week.

Minimum qualifications:  High School diploma.  Valid Ohio driver’s license.  Must be able to work weekends and holidays.  Must be 18 years of age, drug free, have a clean work record, and no criminal background.  Must be insurable under Lake Metroparks auto insurance. 

Concessionaire/Gate Keeper

Rate: $8.30/hour - minimum starting rate

Assist the public in the concession area and the admissions gate. Prepare, serve, and sell food service items to the public. Keep concession areas clean and well maintained. Represent Lake Metroparks in a positive manner. Assist with inventory, special events, and programs when required.

Farmpark Interpreter

Brief description/Requirements:

Provide information to Farmpark general visitors and groups, including scouts, tour groups, and students, via 20-minute presentations and personal interaction. Responsible for general care of animals and/or plants within the interpretive area, where applicable. Assist with the development of interpretive materials. Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe interpretive area.

Must be able to enthusiastically present clear and concise information to individuals and groups (ranging in size from 5-100). Must be willing to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays. Good communication and customer service skills are required. Must be able to perform manual labor including but not limited to cleaning and lifting. Experience with livestock and/or plants is helpful.

Camp Counselors

Rate: $8.30/hour - minimum starting rate

Location: Different Sites within Lake Metroparks, will be assigned to work at one location.

Brief description/Requirements:

Provide leadership, supervision and safety for small groups (sized 8-30) while participating in outdoor nature/science-related, art or active skill oriented activities.

Duties will include some or most of the following: Assist in development and delivery of nature/science-related activities; assist in instruction of canoeing, fishing, kayaking, art, rock climbing, survival skills, science experiments and archery; provide supervision for campers during camp and at lunchtime; maintain records, parent sign in and sign out forms and other assigned paperwork; and lead/supervise off-site field trips.

Provide supervision and activities for extended hours of service before and after camp on rotating basis. Help provide supervision and training for Volunteer Counselor Aides.

Assist in the development and daily operation of the Farmcamp program at Lake Metroparks Farmpark. Provide leadership, supervision and safety for groups (sized 10-40 of children age 4-12) while participating in indoor and outdoor farm-related activities. Duties include: Assisting in the development of farm related activities; conducting camp type games; providing supervision at campers lunch time; presenting farm related camp activities; maintaining attendance records for campers and leading off-site field trips.

Must be able to deal effectively with children grades 1-8. Counselors must be outgoing and able to establish healthy rapport with children; imaginative; creative and exhibit excellent communication skills for campers and parents. Counselors must demonstrate background in working with children and have at least one year of college. Valid Ohio driver’s license. Must be insurable under Lake Metroparks auto insurance.  Background check required.

Outdoor Education Specialist

Rate: $8.30/hour - minimum starting rate

Location: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park and Environmental Learning Center

Brief description/Requirements:

Responsible for conceptualizing, planning, coordinating and implementing summer programming at various Lake Metroparks facilities. Prepares and presents a variety of children’s recreational programs such as hiking, fishing, GPS, disc golf, kayaking/canoeing with emphasis on children from 3-15 years of age.

First Aid recommended (will train). Must be able to work weekdays in June through August, and able to work weekends and holidays when required. Previous experience with recreational programming for elementary-aged children preferred. Must provide own transportation to parks and throughout Lake County. Must be available for training/preparation work in May. Good customer service skills. Must have reliable transportation and current Ohio drivers’ license.  Background check required.

Park Maintenance Workers

Rate: $8.30/hour - minimum starting rate

Brief description/Requirements:

Building and/or grounds maintenance, performs general park clean up. Mowing park grounds, painting, picking up litter, landscaping, assisting in making minor repairs on buildings and/or machines and performing custodial tasks. Assist in setting up special events. Must have the ability to perform physical labor, follow directions and set priorities. Willing to work flexible hours, weekends, evenings and holidays as required. Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor, with the ability to lift fifty (50) lbs.  Must have valid drivers’ license with good record to be insurable by Lake Metroparks auto insurance.

Ball Field (specific to Painesville Township Park): Mowing outfield, drag and line infields, layout ball diamonds, and irrigation work. Knowledge of softball/baseball rules preferred.

Garden (specific to Farmpark): planting, weeding, and other basic garden maintenance. Experience using a tiller preferred and some horticulture knowledge.

Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park (specific location duties): Assist with setting up and tearing down of a wide variety of events throughout the summer months. Assist with daily cleaning and monitoring of beach conditions. General knowledge of boating and or water sports safety is preferred

Sailing Instructor

Rate: $8.30/hour - minimum starting rate

Brief description/Requirements:

This dynamic individual will work with Lake Metroparks and its Outdoor Education Department during the summer boating season; assist with program delivery for the Spirit of America and park sponsored sailing camps and individual programs; assist in sailboat maintenance and its rigging equipment and maintain a clean, safe and a fully operational environment. Individual will also assist with special events and/or programs when required and promote Lake Metroparks in a positive manner.

This individual must be at least 18 years of age and be comfortable in and around the open water of Lake Erie. Must possess a basic knowledge and experience in small sailboats, Hunter JY’s and Lasers and 14’, 16’ Hobie Catamarans. Must also be able to operate a 12’ inflatable safety boat with a 9.9 motor and have coaching and rescue skills.

Individual must complete an Ohio Boaters Education Course by the start of the boating season. Strong public relations skills required, as this position deals directly with program participants. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.  Background check required.
